Songs From Good News Week
A comedic tour de force, Good News Week first graced our screens back in 1996; and has been entertaining, informing and amusing us ever since, with a diverse range of guests, an unparallelled level of absurdity and an always present sense of sharp satirical wit.

Behind the comedy, music was also an important part of the show, featuring many musicians, delighting us with thier talents. However it was when host Paul McDermott took to the stage, microphone in hand that we really paid attention; from ballads to rock, from duets to comedy songs, when Paul opened his mouth to sing, magic happened.

Songs From The Sideshow
Chaotic, psychotic, but a whole lot of fun, The Sideshow was an idea conceived by the Good News Week Team, born from the desire to bring back the good old fashioned variety show, in a similar fashion to 'The Big Gig', which had been sorely missed from our screens since wrapping up in the early nineties.

Although it only lasted for a single season, there was something for everyone with comedy, live music, cabaret, circus and burlesque; and it was indeed a much welcomed breath of fresh air among a television landscape drowning in the time with imported sitcoms and mind numbing reality shows.

Good News Weekend & GNW: Night Lite
In the late nineties, Good News Week spawned two spinoffs. The first, 'Good News Weekend, aired ten episodes in 1998, while the second, 'GNW: Night Lite' aired throughout 1999; both of which were unfortunately short-lived.

While Good News Week mocked and satirized news and current events without mercy, both the spin-offs tended to focus on lighter topics, such as entertainment, music and pop culture, however still with the same witty sense of humor which audiences had grown to love. In a similar vein to Good News Week, both often featured musical performances, from a diverse range of artists - with Paul taking up the mic on many an occasion.

DAAS Live Performances
Based on the British TV series 'Saturday Live', The Big Gig was a variety show hosted by Wendy Harmer, which ran for a few short years between 1989 and 1992. It was very much the precursor to 'The Sideshow' in 2007; and featured a whole range of local comedy and musical talent, including regular guests The Doug Anthony All Stars, a musical comedy group comprising of Tim Ferguson, Richard Fidler and Paul McDermott.

The group has mostly been inactive since the early 90's, however have reformed multiple times over the years for various reuinion shows. You can keep with the latest DAAS news by joining the fan club here, from who some of the images and music on this site have been generously provided by.

I've Seen The Future, And You're Not In It.
A brand new EP from Paul, “forged during the bleak nuclear winter of 2021…under the all-seeing eye of Gladys’ Big Brother state” – was recorded during Sydney’s latest lockdown and is a response to the absence of a creative outlet.

“Written and recorded during the lockdown of 2021, this five track EP is offered up as a gift in the uncertain times we all find ourselves, an opiate for the masses as we rebuild our way of life.”

Available on both Apple Music & Spotify.

With Steven Gates - Bloody Lovelies
National treasure, Paul McDermott (GNW, DAAS) teams up with Steven Gates (TRIPOD) to present a suite of pretty songs intended to highlight their more harmonic and beautiful 'sides'.

Here are some of the first songs Paul and Gatesy ever put together. Paul lives in Sydney and Gatesy lives in Melbourne so creating this EP and subsequent live show over Skype was no mean feat.

Recorded in late January 2019 at a room in Bondi Pavilion, hear what Paul and Gatesy sound like when they're singing in sync; they were surprised too.

The Dark Garden
As part of the Adelaide Caberet Festival in 2013, Paul had a limited run of shows under the title 'The Dark Garden', an engaging mix of emotionally-charged music, captivating storytelling and whip-smart comedy.

PAUL SINGS: Live At The Famous Speigeltent
During the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2012, Paul did a small run of shows under the banner of 'Paul Sings', where with a backing band, Paul revisited songs from throughout his long and colorful career. Some were rarities, only played once on Good News Week, while others were from his time with DAAS.

One of the nights was recorded for a live DVD, from which the songs here have been featured; however I strongly recommend buying the DVD in addition as it's an entertaining watch.

Blue
A legend within DAAS folklore, this album was recorded during the early 1990's, an album comprised of ballads, most of which were covers, however was never released. Despite this, it leaked at some point and there are now a variety of copies circling the net, each with varying quality.

Although audio quality is not the best, it gives us an idea of what might have been.
